Tufnell Park School is an Islington community school. We are a one and a half form entry inner city primary school with 336 currently on roll, but we're currently in the process of being rebuilt and expanded into a three form entry school to accommodate the changing demographics of our area. Our children are aged 3 to 11 including a 30-place nursery with children attending full and part time. 36% of children are currently eligible for Pupil Premium.
We are situated in an area of wide ranging social context. Whilst there are increasing numbers of middle classes moving into the area, the school serves a core of families living in mainly social housing in an area of considerable deprivation. Worklessness is significant, as is crime, poor mental health and involvement with Children’s Social Care. For many children, financial poverty leads to limited experiences outside of school and relatively narrow aspirations. Many families need significant support to ensure their children attend school regularly.
41% children are from minority ethnic families, and 31% speak English as an additional language. 39 (12%) children have Special Educational Needs.
As a school community, we value the extraordinary potential of our pupils and their love of learning. We believe that Augmented and Virtual Reality within the curriculum will not only support and develop our pupils' love for learning and give them new opportunities to fulfil their potential, but also help us preserve our school community’s history in preparation for the upcoming changes through the school’s building project.
The use of computers is fully embedded within our curriculum, and we have been running a successful Code Club for some years with the help of volunteers from the local software developer firm Softwire. However, our pupils do not currently enjoy the benefits of using mobile devices at school, and are yet to experience the application of VR in the classroom.
As we continue to look for ways in which technology can provide greater opportunities for the whole school, we have identified VR as a significant tool in providing new and exciting learning experiences for all our pupils. We feel it would engage and motivate them, as well as providing them with experiences which can shape their learning and their future.
Over the next 18 months the use of VR technology would increase the engagement and educational opportunities for our pupils during our transition from the old building to the new. We want film and VR to play the main role in documenting the changes to the existing school, and displaying developments for the future. This would form a unique resource for future pupils. In addition we want everyone to engage with the new school project and what it means for our community - not only our current pupils, but the wider school community of parents, neighbours and of course staff. We believe that VR would help us engage and enthuse our school community in the widest sense, creating content which will also inspire and enthuse future generations of pupils and their families in the area.
We believe these resources will impact in several ways:
• Engagement of pupils in their learning and taking ownership of it;
• Pupils’ greater understanding of the key vocabulary or concepts for a topic or theme;
• Pupils’ experience of places and sights outside of their location, their country or even in Space;
• Pupils’ ability to develop their own AR and VR content, with respect to the ‘old school’ and the ‘new school’ building and grounds.
