Fostering a love of reading for CGPS children

The number of pupils that will benefit from this project is 209 children from age 4-11, of which 8.2% are eligible for free school meals.

About us

We are a small, one form village school in Gravesham, Kent and a very small budget to go with it!

What do we want?

Central to fostering children's love for reading is the development of an inspiring school library which acts as a gateway in order to inspire, encourage and engage children in reading.

As part of our school improvement priority, we have been working hard as a school to raise funds to create an inspiring library based around the children's own ideas. We have brought the library to life with a fabulous graphic backdrop of woodland, carefully merging in class characters: Elmer, Gruffalo, Paddington, Varjak, Hedwig, Aslan and Wolf linked to class texts. The result is simply stunning!

However, to finish our project completely, we would love to raise funds to re-carpet the existing blue carpet tiles to a more appropriate woodland brown!

If we are successful with this project, we would love to then go on to be able to fund a library management system so that our pupil librarians can easily monitor and keep track of our precious library stock as more and more pupils flood to the library to read!

Who is this for?

This project will benefit our entire school!

Why do we want it?

Reading is a life skill that develops the mind and teaches children language skills. It is the foundation to all other learning.

"Reading for pleasure is more important for children's cognitive development than their parents' level of education and is a more powerful factor in life achievement than socio-economic background." (https://readingagency.org.uk/about/impact/002-reading-facts-1/).

Studies have shown that those who read for pleasure have higher levels of self-esteem and a greater ability to cope with difficult situations. Reading for pleasure was also associated with better sleeping patterns. (https://readingagency.org.uk/about/impact/002-reading-facts-1/)

If we're fortunate enough to raise more than our target, then we would also like to buy a school management library system to enable pupil librarians to track stock more easily @ £1,500.
