Ryde Academy

We are an Academy with over 1,000 students on roll. We recognise that each student is an individual with a unique range of abilities, qualities and aspirations for the future. Our role is to ensure that all students can maximise their opportunities and outcomes and to allow them to access their future pathways. We must ensure a personalised and individual educational experience for all students celebrating the richness and diversity within our local community.

What do we want?

We want to obtain a Greenpower Formula 24 electric race car kit. Greenpower Education Trust is a UK-based charity, which gets young people enthusiastic about science and engineering by challenging them to design, build and race an electric car.

Who is this for?

This project will allow us to run the challenge every year with just one kit. The curriculum will engage 100s of girls and boys aged 11-16, learning maths, engineering, science and technological skills in a way that is both fun and accessible to all levels of learners. After completion of a successful build of the car it can be raced by students at the annual Greenpower event. This is something that students can be incredibly proud of, working and learning together as a team.

Why do we want it?

We believe that students need to apply the skills they learn in lessons in a real world way. This will benefit their learning and help them fulfil their potential by teaching them critical thinking skills. These skills allow them to solve problems by working as a team with others and thinking outside the box.

STEM activities like this allow students to consider what GCSEs they may take, further education options and ultimately make young learners think about non-conventional jobs which are available to them.


Following our successful first campaign, this second phase of funding will allow us to raise the remaining funds (£1,500) to purchase the full kit!

Providing a simple, functional route into Greenpower racing, the kit car features the following:

  • Fully welded 2 part steel space frame chassis; 
  • Super strong 20” wheels with free running hubs;
  • Accurate Ackermann steering geometry;
  • Twin front disc brakes;
  • Six batteries and motor included;
  • Fully compliant with current Formula 24/24+ specifications;
  • Kit comprises all required mechanical and electrical parts - except bodywork

Why have we set the target below the price of the kit? We believe that fundraising can be done in phases. This is the first time we have crowdfunded for STEM and we hope to exceed the target and obtain the full amount for the car kit. Phasing the targets like this allows us to do further campaigns should they be required to gain the full amount.


If we're fortunate enough to raise more than our target, then we would use this money to purchase extra battery chargers, spare batteries, tyres and fund travel for students to take part in the annual races.
