Help the children to prepare for their futures, learning programming skills with fun robots!

UPDATE! We've reached and gone beyond our target already, thank you to all our donors so far for your generosity. 

So we have now stretched our target to £959.62 - see below what we'll buying with the money.

About us

We are the PTA of New Inn Primary School in Pontypool, South Wales. 

As a large school, in times where funding is short and expectations are high, we are aiming to help the children to meet the needs of the computing curriculum by enabling them to practice computer programming in a practical, fun way.

What do we want?

We are looking to purchase 15 Edison programmable robots. They are designed to be a complete STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) teaching resource for coding and robotics education for young learners.

As detailed on the Cool Components website, the Edison robot is a powerful, engaging tool for teaching children computational thinking and computer programming in a hands-on way.

With more built-in sensors than any robot in its class as well as lights, sounds and autonomous behaviour capabilities, Edison makes true robotics education accessible to students of all ages.

Edisons robotics capabilities can be unlocked with ease through simple barcode programs. Students can then progress their robotics, coding and STEM education journeys using Edison with three progressive programming languages. Older students can learn the fundamentals of coding as they progress from drag-and-drop icon-based programming all the way through to coding in a vertical text-based language. The students will really enjoy themselves while they learn!! All this will then prepare them for the next stage of their education, and set them up for future careers.

How would we use them?

The school would use the robots in computing lessons as a way of allowing the children to practice vital skills, such as writing code, understanding the importance of clear instruction writing, and learning problem solving skills that they can then use in other areas of learning, such as Maths, where there is a huge emphasis on such skills and also in after school Coding Club. Imagine the fun that the children could have with these robots!!

Why do we want it?

The demands of the new curriculum require the children to be able to code, as well as learning to be digital citizens. By having the robots in school, they will be able to see how the programming skills that they are developing can be used in real life situations, in controlling the robot and making it carry out a series of instructions that they have created. By following the curriculum in this way, we can help them to be digital citizens and to show their full potential in preparation for their futures.
