About us

The Hawthorns Primary School is a Local Authority Primary School based in Woosehill in Wokingham.

What do we want?

IT has always been a subject that we taught within a specialised ICT suite within our school. The subject has had to be timetabled separately and when the children get to the room for a lesson their learning is often held back by equipment that is old, slow and difficult to use. This situation doesn’t reflect the increasing importance of technology in our society or indeed within secondary schools where our children will be expected to have a good understanding of IT and how to use it.

As a school we have made many changes in recent years like updating the Wifi network and also introducing Smart boards and more recently we have been assessing the best method for embracing changes in technology and bringing IT into our classrooms. After undergoing a successful two-class trial in Year 4 and 6 over the past half term we have chosen to begin to purchase Chromebooks that utilise the Google Suite for Education to access a variety of educational applications. This equipment will be used in Key Stage 2 classrooms in the first instance but in the longer term will be available to all children in our school.

Who is this for?

The touch-screen Chromebooks have the ability to act as laptops or tablets and will be the first units to be rolled out to our children to use across a wide range of subjects.

Why do we want it?

Chromebooks are really easy for the children to use. They are also built extremely well and are not easily damaged. They start up quickly and allow the children access to programs which are based in the cloud so there is not the same level of expensive storage issues we have faced in the past with traditional IT. The plan will be eventually to purchase units for each classroom which we will do via our usual fundraising methods but we would like to kickstart this rollout with crowdfunding for an initial purchase of 5 Chromebooks.
