About us

Fairlawn Primary School is a highly successful and happy school in Forest Hill, SE London. We have an active PTA that works closely with the teachers and staff of Fairlawn to support the education of Fairlawn pupils. Each summer term the PTA organise a Fun Run to bring the Fairlawn community together for an exciting morning of running, walking and cheering each other on in a 5K, 1-mile and reception dash. This year our fundraising focus is to support our evolving Outdoor Learning Zone (OLZ).

What do we want?

Fairlawn’s OLZ project is transforming an underused and overgrown area of the school grounds into an exciting Outdoor Learning Zone helping pupils learn about nature and the environment.

Building upon a recent PTA-funded project which significantly upgraded a section of the school grounds, this project will make the most of the great appetite amongst the children and teaching staff for even more opportunities to learn in informal settings about subjects related to nature - wildlife, food growing, science, the environment and horticulture.

The project is broken down into a number of phases and we are fundraising for Phase 2 which includes 7 raised beds (one for each year), a mud kitchen and a pizza oven.

Who is this for?

All Fairlawn pupils benefit from the Outdoor Learning Zone during play time, after school club, forest school and ad hoc class time spent in the OLZ.

The further evolution of the site will allow for additional growing (raised beds), playing (mud kitchen) and social and fundraising opportunities (pizza oven).

Why do we want it?

Building an understanding and appreciation of the natural world is a priority at Fairlawn. By further developing this site we look forward to further opportunities for outdoor learning and time in green space within our urban school.

The largest expense for Phase 2 of the OLZ is for a cob pizza oven. The addition of a pizza oven to school grounds will allow for further social and cooking activities during the school day. It will also provide a simple on-site option for providing food at community events, including the Winter and Summer fairs.
